- From a review of Every Season Under Heaven: The storytelling in Neufeld’s novel is exceptionally vivid. The reader is plunged into a living history. And there’s good reason for this (aside from the writer’s talent). Every Season Under Heaven is based on original documents, letters and diaries written by Neufeld’s own forebears. Anna and Johann are his grandparents. Much credit must go to Peter Neudorf, a long-time supporter of the Mennonite Historical Society of BC, who translated family documents from the German: seventy letters and a 700-page journal. The result is a story that can sometimes take your breath away.
