TOPIC

On Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, Dr. John Martens spoke to us on "All Souls' Day". Many Christians, even those who have been baptized, don't want to be turned into a "saint" because they believe that it requires an extraordinary level of calling and commitment. However, John observes that God has always been calling his people to be saints. The Israelites were called to follow the Torah, that they can be God's people and deserving of God's Kingdom. The disciples were all saints, so they were called to be saintly. In time, all people will worship God, and the form of corporate holiness will encompass the entire earth. The calling is extraordinary, but it is also mundane. We are called to love our enemies, and to do good to those who hate us. [JL]

Dr. John Martens is Director of the Centre for Christian Engagement at St. Mark's College.
