J. Evan Kreider led us in a series of thoughts, meditations and prayers on the people who have passed from our lives this year past for our celebration of Eternity Sunday. Death is a subject too often seen as too morbid for consideration, or falsely glossed over with the phrase “they are in a better place”, or worst of all, remembered only in our self-penned “obituaries written as dull as the books we write”. But Evan demonstrated to us the imagery that poets and theologians have gifted us with over the centuries to show how “we are fearfully and wonderfully made,” and as we uttered the remembrance of a name, a bell is rung signifying the race is won. Perhaps the scoundrel privateer Sir Walter Raleigh said it best when he wrote on his dark night of the soul before beheading: “Even such is Time, which takes in trust our youth, our joys, and all we have, and pays us but with age and dust, who in the dark and silent grave, when we have wandered all our ways, shuts up the story of our days: and from which earth, and grave, and dust, The Lord shall raise me up, I trust.”
